9 Popescu, Elena
[br]b. 1877 Romaniad. 5 September 1944 Bucharest (?), Romania[br]Romanian inventor of the Romanian needle threader.[br]Popescu came from a fairly prosperous family. Outwardly she led a conventional life as wife of an army officer and mother of nine children; yet, as her unpublished diaries reveal, even when caught up in the fighting in the First World War she led an intense inner life isolated from her surroundings and hardly guessed at even by many members of her family. She seems to have had a mechanical turn of mind, for at the age of 14 she achieved the invention which should have earned her some fame. One day, when home for the school holidays, she saw an elderly servant struggling to thread a needle. Popescu resolved to devise some means of making life easier for the servant. She tried using various materials, including animal and human hair and plant fibres, but finally settled on fine steel wire fashioned into a kind of crochet needle. This did not work too well at first, until its shape had been modified with use. Helped by a mechanically minded younger brother, she made two or three further threaders, which immediately impressed the neighbouring needlewomen. Fired by success, she made 20 or 30 more, but then her return to school occupied her mind to the exclusion of needle threaders. Some twenty years later, when visiting a haberdasher's shop in Bucharest, she noticed on sale a needle threader very similar to her own, advertised as "recently invented in the USA".[br]Further ReadingA.Stanley, 1993, Mothers and Daughters of Invention, Meruchen, NJ: Scarecrow Press, 581–3, 912–6.LRD -

13 indeed
• "... I had been promised a meeting with one Julius Gore-Urquhart, of whom you may have heard." Dixon had indeed heard of Gore-Urquhart... (KA: 47)
• She asked the Duchess of Abercorn whether this was indeed the case. (EL: 147)
• Angelica, he learns from Tardieu, was indeed at the conference, but didn't join the sightseeing tour. (DL: 298)
• "... we've had a deluge, indeed, from all over the country. Cards, calls, the most glorious flowers..." (DT: 390)
• "This has been an odd morning indeed. Most peculiar. I'll tell you about it on the way." (DT: 559)
• For the first time he couldn't avoid imagining what she'd say to him, if indeed she'd say something, when he next saw her. (KA: 64)
• Moreover, by yielding now he would be able to bob up again, as indeed he did a week or so later... (EL: 256)
• Why did she take the unusual course of approaching the Prime Minister instead of speaking first to Lady Flora... ? Lady Tavistock, indeed, later said that she herself had wished to take up the matter direct with Lady Flora but 'circumstances' prevented her. (EL: 119)
•... a sign... that King Leopold was out of touch with his niece's situation. Indeed, he had admitted as much when he wrote to her on May 25th: 'My dearest child - You have had some... difficulties of which I am completely in the dark.' (EL: 72)
• '... dear Bertie is so full of good & amiable qualities... that it makes one forget... much that one would wish different.' Nevertheless one did wish much different, indeed, almost his whole way of life. (EL: 457)
• The exhausted prince was unable, indeed unwilling to fill the gap. (EL: 364)
• The Princess's health... was back to normal; indeed she had to return... smart gaiters sent by Aunt Louise from Paris because they were too small. (EL: 68)
• Victoria's character was in fact neither simple nor crystalline. Indeed, part of her fascination lies in her contradictions and inconsistencies... (EL: 54)
• '... I should have said that husband of yours had quite a roving eye!' 'Really, Blanche!' Joan flushed angrily. A roving eye, indeed. Rodney! ( AC2: 14)
• No she didn't blame Rodney - not even for that kiss she had surprised. Under the mistletoe indeed! ( AC2: 39)
14 brunt
Также существовала фраза at the first brunt, которая изначально означала «при первом нападении», но потом стала ещё одним вариантом at first (во-первых). At the first brunt уже вышло из употребления, но ещё говорят о to bear the brunt — принимать главный удар (физически или морально). I was the first person she saw when she came into the room, so naturally I bore the brunt of her anger. When things go wrong in the classroom, it's usually teachers who bear the brunt of parents' complaints.

19 come into one's head
Useless to think of what she was going to say - she must say whatever came into her head when she saw him. (J. Galsworthy, ‘Flowering Wilderness’, ch.
The idea of allowing a child to do whatever comes into its head, in order to permit it free expression, seems to me to be absolute nonsense. It makes for spoiled, whining and disrespectful children.
He gave the first name that came into his head. —
It hasn't even entered my head. —
